Top 3 tips for using Silver Socks

Writer: FloreFlore

Silver Socks are designed to stay in place for several hours, but it is recommended to check and adjust them twice a day (morning and evening). It is normal for the socks to slip down slightly, about 1 to 2 cm below the knee or hock, after being worn for 8 to 12 hours.

To prevent them from slipping or wearing out prematurely, here are three tips from our customers:

Top 3 des astuces pour utiliser les chaussettes Silver

Tip #1: Use Bell Boots Over Silver Socks

With the horse's natural movement, it is normal for the socks to slip down slightly. To prevent them from sliding and getting stepped on—damaging the lower part of the sock—you can use bell boots placed over the Silver Socks.

Tip #2: Wear Boots Over Silver Socks

If your horse is between sizes or if you notice the socks slipping down regularly, you can put protective boots over the Silver Socks to help keep them in place. However, be careful not to tighten the boots too much.

Tip #3: Use Adhesive Tape to Secure Silver Socks

Another option for keeping the Silver Socks in place is using electrical tape. This type of tape stretches, so if applied correctly, it won’t harm the horse. Additionally, it doesn’t leave residue on the socks and is easy to apply and remove.

There are two methods:

  • The spiral method, where the tape is wrapped without uneven pressure, as demonstrated by a veterinarian.

  • The loop method, where two or three simple loops of tape are placed around the sock.

As long as the tape is applied without excessive tightness, both methods are safe. Only apply a single layer of tape. If the sock and the tape layer slide down to the fetlock due to movement, the tape will safely stretch and release without causing harm.

Bonus Tip: Rotate the Silver Socks

It is recommended to wash the Silver socks every 2 to 3 days to restore their elasticity and prevent their antimicrobial properties from being compromised. To ensure your horse always wears clean socks, opt for a pack of 4 so you can rotate them without leaving your horse unprotected.
